Earrings with ‘Lovespoon’.
A lovespoon was traditionally carved in wood and given to somebody as a romantic gift of intent, a custom that originated in Wales centuries ago. They were given to a young woman by her suitor as it was important for the girl’s father to see that the young man was capable of providing for the family and woodworking.
Hearts represent love in all its many aspects. They also symbolise ‘having heart’, the power of courage and will. To the ancient Egyptians it was the heart, rather than the brain, which was seen as the organ that held the person’s soul. Hearts as symbols of love, date from the later medieval period but didn’t become as established part of the Celtic repertoire until the last decade of the 20th Century.
