Ganesh, il dio della saggezza e del successo dalla testa di elefante, è il difensore e rimuove gli ostacoli, deve essere propiziato prima di adorare altri dei. È uno dei figli di Shiva.
È conosciuto come ‘Sidhi Data’ o dispensatore di successo nel lavoro. In origine la sua testa di elefante ha solo una zanna piena, mentre l’altra è spezzata. Ha detto di averla persa in una rissa con Parasuram. Si dice anche che la spezzò per scrivere il Mahabharata sotto la dettatura del saggio Vyasa.
Si ritiene che la sua testa di elefante sia un emblema di saggezza e la sua cavalcatura un emblema di sagacia. La sua cavalcatura è il ‘Mooshika’ chiamato topo ragno. È anche conosciuto come Vinayaka.
