Beautiful Hmong skirt built in the traditional local processing.
The upper end is straight and forms the yoke, sewn together with the fabric underneath which is fully pleated and adorned with contrasting thread.
Lower down, the motif is given by a hand embroidered cross stitch strip and embellished with trimmings and scraps of old clothing which, as per custom, are ‘recycled’ to create new ones.
The lower end consists of a velvet fabric as the edge.
The width of the skirt at the base is about 2.10 mt, while the length is about 65 cm.
The size is fully adjustable to the proper measure: in fact the skirt has a wallet-like closure with two tubular cords, finished with decorative pom-poms.
‘The Hmongs: Chinese ethnic minority, in the past centuries they have moved from their place of origin to go and populate some regions of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.
While maintaining a common stock, over time the Hmongs have been mixed and integrated with the existing native populations, introduced their own use and customs – especially with regard to the richness of details, particularly visible in the art of manufacturing traditional clothing.’
